Finding the right lawyer
career coach is about finding the right mix of expertise,
experience, and chemistry. I'm Cameron Powell, Founder of
Hot Blue
and Certified Coach, and for most lawyers looking for career
change my lawyer career
coaches and I offer all three (the
free coaching consultation
is there for you to get a handle on the chemistry).
Identify the sine qua non of all goals and decisions about direction: your values and motivators. If you're unhappy now, isn't it because you're doing something not aligned with what you value and what fires you up? See our career assessments, interpreted by your coach and Certified Assessments Coach Merrilee Olsen-Axtell. We also provide our clients with free copies of our electronic Strategic Life Planning Handbook, for those who prefer the reflective power of the searching (if short-answer) essay.
Figure out -- and then actually begin to move
toward -- your Ideal Environment and a more satisfying and less stressful
career (or start your own business). Make a career more
aligned with who you are, how you like to be, and how
you like to work.

Assessments of
Preferred Behavior, Values and Attitudes, and Core Skills and
Weaknesses.
Following the free consultation, we
typically begin by having you take some quick,
inexpensive assessments. These can be done online, in your home or office, in about 40 minutes. We will then send you an information-stuffed 65-page report; clients find it so useful, they hole-punch it and save it for future reference in all major career and relationship decisions.
These assessments will
tell you things about yourself that you do not know, priceless
information about the gap between your natural, preferred
behavioral style and your adapted style (that gap is known as
stress, or boredom, which is subtler brand of stress). Sometimes they will reinforce what you do already know, but have tried to ignore. This is often the most powerful function of all.
Are you working in an environment that's
conducive to your strengths? Are you stressfully
attempting to play to your weaknesses? Do you even know
what your preferred behaviors are, and how they compare to what
you're doing now? (If you don't know what you value and
understand your preferred behaviors, how will you evaluate upcoming job
descriptions or even offers?) Are you aware of the different
value systems of others in a way that allows you to lead or work
with them with astuteness and emotional intelligence?
Using the information from the assessments, our
own Strategic Life Planning Handbook, and the coaching itself,
we will begin to set goals, target dates, and milestones, and
you will immediately begin to make progress toward reinventing yourself.

How We Coach Attorneys Through Career Change
Coaching is a dialectical process -- and sometimes gently
Socratic -- designed to elicit from you what you already know .
. . but just haven't acted upon. At other times, we'll tell you
what we think. That may amount to the first direct
and unbiased advice or observation about yourself that you have heard
in a long time. We may also recommend that clients do
behavior and workstyle assessments to ensure that their values,
motives, and preferred behavioral styles are in alignment with
the structures of their lives and work.
We may also work with you through our
Strategic Life Planning Handbook: The Creation of the Future
Self. It's a compendium of what we have learned as coaches, as well as the best do-it-yourself books on the market. Except with our Handbook, you'll actually finish the exercises, and then have someone to talk them over with.
We'll discuss your values (what really matters to you) and
uncover your true self -- the person you were before the
accretions from other people. We'll go
back into your past and rediscover what you really loved to do,
before you lost your way.
And we'll counsel courage, patience, and perseverance (what
you still had when you studied for the LSAT and bar), because changing careers
is not easy, nor will it happen overnight or, in most cases, even this year. But you'll be laying the absolutely critical foundations for doing so. The typical course of coaching for attorneys
seeking career change is about three months, or 12 sessions. The
first session is free, so act now before you lose that impulse
for change . . .
